DESCRIPTION


Mendocino-Lake Community College District is currently accepting applications for a Professional Expert, Short-Term, Non-Continuing Fire Science Lab Instructional Support.

This is a temporary, non-continuing position. This position will remain open until filled.

Under the direction of the appropriate Dean or designee provides professional expertise and specific programmatic support in the Fire Science discipline.

SALARY AND BENEFITS

This is a Professional Expert, temporary, hourly position, hours per work will vary, $35.00 per hour, for the duration of January 17, 2023 through May 19, 2023; Ed Code 88003 authorizes a governing board to hire STNC employees for less than 75% of a school year, up to 180 days.
Scheduled hours and days will vary based on available lab schedule.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES


The successful candidate will support institutional and student success by executing the following duties:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Demonstrates firefighter apparatus and equipment such as rescue tools, portable pumps, and Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus gear to illustrate fireground application.
  • Provides fire science demonstrations and instructional support to students
  • Assists with fire science material coordination and/or dispersion
  • May assist with fire science reporting and documentation
  • May assist with set up of classroom materials and exhibits

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

None

WORKING CONDITITONS:

Outdoor lab setting at various Fire Agency locations throughout the district; subject to moderate noise; frequent interruptions; frequent social interactions.

QUALIFICATIONS


MINIMUM QUALIFCATIONS:

Candidate must have minimum 1 year experience as a paid fire fighter or 2 years experience as a volunteer fire fighter. Must meet Human Resources guidelines for qualified hiring; including by not limited to a Live Scan background check and completion of TB test.

EDUCATION:

High School Diploma/GED Equivalent required

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:

Preferred but not required
  • Completion of State Fire Training (SFT) Instructor 1A and 1B OR
  • Instructor I (offered through the State Fire Marshal's Office) or
  • State Fire Marshal Instructor Certificate

KNOWLEDGE OF:
  • Specific curriculum and any equipment or tools, as appropriate to the lab setting;
  • Basic teaching and learning principles, study skills, and customer service skills;
  • Appropriate language skills including usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, vocabulary;
  • Basic arithmetic;
  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy

ABILITY TO:
  • Demonstrate a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds of stakeholders;
  • Follow verbal and written directions;
  • Follow through on assigned task;
  • Conduct self in a professional manner;
  • Abide by District policies and procedures;
  • Ability to lift up to 125 pounds
  • Walk and/or stand for intermittent periods;
  • Develop and maintain constructive relationship with students of diverse learning needs;
  • Maintain accurate records;
  • Help students identify problems and recommend solutions

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT(Prior to beginning employment)
  • In accordance with Federal Law all employees must provide proof of eligibility to work in the United States;
  • Must be fingerprinted through DOJ and FBI and have background clearance; and Must take a TB test (once hired and every four years thereafter).
  • Within 6 months of employment, must complete required District trainings such as Sexual Harassment Prevention.
