Position Summary:
The primary responsibility is to perform lab, greenhouse, and field research procedures for the University of Idaho's Pale Cyst Nematode (PCN, Globodera pallida) research program on the Moscow Campus as part of a multi-state collaborative effort to eradicate PCN in Idaho under the direction of the PCN Project Director. The position will be to perform research activities and other necessary tasks to eradicate PCN in Idaho.Performs research activities, data entry, maintaining protocols for cleaning and disinfecting lab, and greenhouse bays as per PCN containment protocols. Assist with rearing and phenotyping of PCN. Order and stock supplies and equipment to conduct research. Estimates materials needed for projects including but not limited to soil, sand, building materials for field experiments, and greenhouse/lab supplies. Estimates timelines to complete projects efficiently. Operates and maintains research equipment. Assures proper labeling of research material and paperwork. Coordinates with multiple trade, government agencies, and businesses to execute and troubleshoot projects. Operates, maintains, and repairs small engines; operates trucks, trailers, and other farm equipment.This position is supported by federal USDA-APHIS, USDA-ARS, and USDA-NIFA funds, state funds, and commodity groups.
Distinguishing Characteristics:Performs and maintains routine research experiments. Operates scientific equipment. Operates, maintains, calibrates, and sterilizes laboratory/greenhouse/field equipment as needed including small engine, and truck and trailer operation. Data entry and maintenance of inventories. Familiarity with quarantine containment protocols. Assures proper labeling, and paperwork for phenotyping and bioassays. Distributes, maintains, and orders research supplies. Knowledge of scientific methods, microscopy use, and other standard laboratory equipment, such as the use of autoclave, and sterile technique. Knowledge and ability to operate farm machinery.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • BA degree or higher
  • One year of research experience.
  • Experience providing technical support in following established procedures and protocols.
  • Experience keeping complete and accurate records for research and analysis of scientific data.
  • Experience with computers, data entry, and retrieval of data.
  • Experience identifying and evaluating scientific samples and determining the need for further testing.
  • Experience maintaining detailed records of samples and data.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • MA degree in horticulture, natural resources, plant or applied sciences
  • Two years of lab, greenhouse, or field experience in agriculture, nematology, plant pathology, plant science, or natural sciences
  • Demonstrated organizational and time management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability in data analysis.
  • Experience maintaining and rearing nematode cultures.
  • Experience in field research.
  • Experience with sterile technique
  • Ability to operate farm equipment.
  • Knowledge of plant care/plant health
  • Knowledge of soil types, drainage, and soil amendments
  • Experience with containment protocols for quarantine pests.
  • Experience maintaining plants under greenhouse conditions.
  • Operation, maintenance, and repair of small engines and pumps.
  • Possess a valid driver's license
