Position Summary
The Sierra Nevada Field Campus (SNFC) Lead is responsible for the creation, promotion, implementation and successful coordination of the summer program of College of Extended Learning classes and University Corporation (UCorp) workshops, along with management of the facility itself.
This includes the overall coordination of administrative, management and research activities of the Sierra Nevada Field Campus (SNFC). The position oversees field station staff and seasonal employees in designing and implementing research, education, and outreach programs, as well as maintenance and upgrades of facilities and infrastructure. The lead is responsible for developing and managing budget and resources to meet overall field station goals, for planning and fund-raising for future facilities and programs, and for ensuring regulatory compliance and adherence to university policy. The incumbent may represent the Field Campus in developing partnerships between the SNFC and the local community, other CSU Campuses, non-governmental organizations, and local, state, and federal agencies (e.g., California Dept. of Fish and Wildlife, U.S. Forest Service). This position is responsible for maintaining a registration platform and other communications originating from SF State University.
The purpose of the position is aligned to SFSU's core mission of facilitating and encouraging research, education and community service. The position involves a broad spectrum of highly varied activities necessary to the maintenance of the facilities in a functional, usable state; the encouragement of new and continuing research, education programs for the public, and interfacing with the community, non-governmental organizations, and various agencies to develop and implement creative partnerships and collaborations. This position reports to the Dean of the College of Science & Engineering (CoSE).
Position Information
Seasonal Duties on Site:
- Assumes lead role of the seasonal field station staffing team, encouraging and fostering positive attitudes, setting a good example, delegating and prioritizing staff responsibilities.
- Communicates frequently with the SF State administration regarding all aspects of the field station operations.
- Works to ensure instructors expectations and needs are met.
- Works to ensure facilities and vehicles are maintained.
- Assumes lead role in the working relationship of the instructors and field station staff insuring both the educational program expectations of the instructor and the operational limitations of the field station and staff are realistic and negotiated equitably when necessary.
- Serve as the medically trained professional and find coverage for campus during days off.
- Ensures that equipment and staff resources at the field station are used efficiently and fairly when more than one group is utilizing the field station to meet the needs of each group as equitably as possible.
- Handles Forest Service permits, telephone, utility and internet providers, oversees outside repair agencies
- Acts as a representative of both the field station, San Francisco State University and UCorp in dealing with the local community, local partner organizations.
Operations Coordination:
- Identifies staff and field station needs and supplies; oversees the food services; keeps detailed records of expenditures; provides receipts to the appropriate UCorp; bi-monthly prepares payroll for staff; prepares a weekly budget and petty cash reconciliation reports.
- Develops and monitors budget, revenue, expenses, human resources and space planning.
- Ensures the coordination, supervision and performance of all activities necessary to the operational, educational, and research-related planning. Plans and coordinates all daily operations and activities.
- Researches, reviews, approves and facilitates proposals for research.
- Works closely with Head Chef to coordinate successful implementation of campus dining services.
Staff Lead Responsibilities:
- Leads, delegates and assigns duties to staff, arbitrates problems in an appropriate, direct and fair manner, and coordinate staff work schedules.
- Assists the Dean of CoSE and UCorp with annual evaluations of Sierra Nevada Field Campus staff members.
- Periodically observes and assesses education staff classroom presentations and in field teaching.
- Monitors and follows University regulations regarding staff trainings, volunteer management and others who may be present on the campus.
Field Station Operations:
- Completes daily, weekly, and monthly tasks to maintain full operation of the field station.
- Works with relevant SFSU offices as needed to manage on-site Field Campus facilities.
- Assists in raising revenue through participation in proposal writing, acquisition of proposition funds, and fundraising efforts.
- Coordinates SNFC website, social media accounts and registration platform.
Maintenance:
- Participates in maintenance and repair of the vehicles, buildings, and other equipment as needed.
Off Season Duties and Responsibilities:
- Support guests and registration for classes for the upcoming season.
- Responds promptly to SNFC email.
- Rework SNFC website (Drupal 8) - add new content, links, images, forms, corrections, updates.
- Circulate scheduling questionnaire to instructors, follow up and process the info from the questionnaires into a new schedule and calendar by October 1 for the following season.
- Manage and update the CashNet registration system and electronic schedule document for the summer program.
- Manage and implement the existing UCorp scholarship program.
- Interface with designer for website updates and marketing materials (Oct-Dec).
- Meet December deadline for printing and mailing along with other ways to publicize the program widely. This includes placing targeted ads in magazines, forums on campus, etc..
- Maintain an accurate mailing list.
- Meet February 1 deadline for opening registration with a fully functioning website and new registration system, continue refining based on feedback from student users.
- Using excel spreadsheet system as backup to register students, enter all info, payments, pre-process refunds, answer questions, provide support to students by email and phone.
- Update and understand emergency protocols. Work with Risk Management and Emergency Preparedness throughout the year for emergency support and consultation.
- Interface with SF State faculty, staff and students to promote stronger university use of the Field Campus.
- Interface with the Friends of the Sierra Nevada Field Campus non-profit support group for funds, priorities, support, institutional memory and resources.
- Interface with College of Professional and Global Engagement (CPaGE), record enrollment and drops.
- Serve as staff advisor to the Sierra Nevada Alliance of Gators (SNAG) student organization on campus.

Environmental/Physical/Special
The summer season is spent onsite at the Sierra Nevada Field Campus, about four hours northeast of San Francisco. Off-season duties are performed on campus, in San Francisco except while working remotely, depending upon the approved remote work schedule.
